PROTO_POP | Group Exhibition
As a younger generation of contemporary artists begins to emerge, they seemingly follow a less poetic and more pragmatic approach to their work. Whether addressing the current political climate or social awareness, they do so with an unapologetic confidence, though not without a sense of humor or self-deprecation.
PROTO_POP is an exhibition that embraces spontaneity and directness in equal measure to the processes of reflection, capitulation, and disguise. The presence of a subject, no matter how enclosed, indirect, or fragmentary, exists in the heart of each piece exhibited. PROTO_POP unites literal and conceptual ideas into a comprehensive collection of art reflecting the issues and concerns of today’s global turmoil.
Photography, Kinetic sculpture, colorful screen prints, geometric landscapes, light installation, and complex collages embrace the pop art esthetic. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, incantations of fiction, celebrity, politics, phychology, social media and technology are represented then dismantled by this incredulous group of artists. By examining and deconstructing present day society, the works featured in PROTO_POP draw attention to an increasingly ubiquitous acceptance of mediocrity.
