UNDERBELLY | OPENING RECEPTION
A splendidly sordid group exhibition in midtown Ventura.
Opening Reception | Saturday, October 14, 2017 | 7-10p | RSVP
This international assembly of 22 artists has been invited to participate in exhibition featuring works that suggest more contemplative notions of memory, melancholy, and loss.
Large-scale installations, sculptures and a myriad of 2D works construct a complex collection of familiar forms and visual hybrids imbued with fascinatingly unsettling concepts. The impulses of the artists selected produce unnervingly beautiful images and stimulating motifs inspired by recollections of heartbreak, tragedy and adversity.
Notable Works + Artists
The large-scale interactive pieces by San Francisco based artist Autumn Bree are both imposing and entertaining. By referencing traditional toys, THROUGH A TUNNEL (SOCIAL ANXIETY) and DYSFUNCTION (GROUP DYNAMICS) invites viewer participation by recreating the nostalgia of childhood past, while simultaneously and inconspicuously commenting on the instability of our current social climate.
An award-winning artist from Queensland, Australia, Trisha Lambi is known for her evocative and haunting figurative painting. Our selection, NEVERMORE exemplifies Lambi’s ability to explicate human vulnerability and fragility.
From Vienna, Austria, sculptor Alja Nuener uses dismembered Limoges Porcelain figures dipped in metallic, for her inimitable assemblage titled, DOLLS DON’T CRY. Fascinated by the interstellar origin of gold, Alja focuses on scarcity and sacrifice, utilizing the precious metal as a minimal but integral part of her piece.
